Sound Installation: Scattered Pieces

I installed this piece hoping to make the space that I used inviting for people to walk in, which would trigger the sound. I first thought of having all the sound pieces playing when the "stage" was empty, but I believe it would have had the opposite effect since the sound piece is kind of chaotic when all tracks are playing at once.

I noticed that people interacting with the installed work would come close to, or sit down on the floor. I take this as a sign that they were interested in extracting one singular "track" from the composition, hoping to understand the content better when seperating the tracks from each other. Still, they might all make more sense as a collective, but maybe not until you´ve heard the tracks separately. I made the pictures representing the sound tracks small, as a subtle signifier to get closer in order to see and hear the specific object.

I am thinking they might have been sitting down because walking into it is overwhelming, because your shadow is cast on both sides when you are standing, triggering multiple soundtracks at once. But as soon as you start moving around aware of the source of the sound, it looks like people understand the effect of moving around. It looked as if they slowly discovered how to move through the space, and then directing their attention towards one track at a time, trying to figure out what it is all about.  It is like a puzzle, and some parts are more obvious than others, and I hope the tracks make sense more as a gestalt, than piece by piece, creating a discussion between each other and the participant.

All the tracks are playing in loops in different lengths, creating a phasing effect. Each person walking into the installation will experience a different combination of these, since they take a long time to sync up. This makes it an alleatoric interaction, where each participant stumbles upon a new discovery of the composition, also becoming the dirigent of the show by moving through the space.

It was fun to see people interacting with this piece, and really spending time with it. It was a good learning experience to observe peoples movement through the space, based on the signifier of the sound, and the images indicating the source of each track. I got a lot of good feedback from people saying it was as if there were some pieces left out that you weren´t supposed to hear, and I think that works well, speaking of Gestalt theory in this work.
